URBAN GROWTH COMMITTEE

Chairperson Linda Gore
Liaison David Lorms

Work begins on a new Gaithersburg Master Plan. Special consideration will be given to the Casey Tract adjacent to Bennington (also known as the site for Parklands). Be aware that they City of Gaithersburg is now calling the Casey Tract the Casey/Metropolitan Grove property.

The Master Plan is the blueprint for how the city should develop over the next twenty years. The City Council has been holding work sessions on the Master Plan; one will focus entirely on what citizens would like done with the Casey Tract.

Casey-Metropolitan Grove Community Work Sessions

The City of Gaithersburg is holding a series of meetings on the Casey-Metropolitan Grove Special Study Area as part of a City-wide Master Plan update. All meetings will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Gaithersburg Upcounty Senior Center, 80A Bureau Dr. Gaithersburg, MD 20877. Dates and topics are listed below.

Interested participants are divided into theme based FOCUS GROUPS:

  • Recreation and Environment
  • Economic Development
  • Transportation and Transit
  • Education and Housing

Here is a brief summary of what various focus groups decided at the November 12 Stakeholder meeting on the Casey Tract (aka Parklands).

Housing and Education: There will be capacity problems with area schools for at least 7 to 10 years. No residential construction should occur at the site in that time frame unless it is for Seniors.

Recreation and Environment: Large areas of the mature forest should be preserved for wildlife, natural beauty, and a buffer to the transit that is planned for the tract.

Economic Development: No consensus was achieved. The group generally felt that nothing should be built until infrastructure was in place, though there was not a consensus on how to define "infrastructure." A number of commercial uses for the property were suggested, including a large cultural venue (such as a Wolftrap type installation), high rise office, and "mixed use development."

Traffic and Transit: No report available.

The next meeting will take place on Monday, November 25, 7:30 PM, 80A Bureau Drive. The focus groups will make their formal reports, followed by discussion.

If you cannot attend, please make you ideas and concerns known by writing Mayor Katz and the Gaithersburg City Council at 31 South Summit Ave., Gaithersburg 20877.

All meetings will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Gaithersburg Upcounty Senior Center, 80A Bureau Dr. Gaithersburg, MD 20877.
